Nephron Health Policy Team: Why MSSP is the Future for ACOs – Not ACO REACH

Nephron Research’s Health Policy team of Paul Heldman and Sasha Simpson regularly serve up policy analysis that stands on its own and also seamlessly complements the sector-based work of our fundamental groups.  A great example is the team’s new Value-Based Care series.

In the first edition published to subscribers earlier this week, Sasha and Paul explored accountable care organization (ACO) models within the Medicare program including changes proposed by the Biden administration for the Medicare Shared Savings Program and the next iteration of the direct contracting program known as ACO REACH.

They assert that MSSP will serve as the foundation for accountable care arrangements and physician enablement moving forward, while components of ACO REACH will be brought into MSSP after 2026.

Broadly, this new series will provide details and the outlook for models the team believes will play central roles in the administration’s goal of moving all traditional fee-for-service Medicare beneficiaries to a value-based care arrangement by 2030.
